Chapter 13

Jake

Later that day, I got out of my meeting with the band and headed back to my office. My parents were there when I arrived, which was strange. They never came to my office.

“Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad. What brings you to my office?”

“Sit down,” Dad commanded, his voice stern and cold.

I did as I was told and sat down on the plush blue velvet couch. “What’s going on? I just got back from a meeting with the band. Is everything okay?”

Dad turned to Mom then turned back to me. “The thing is, son, you’ve been messing around here for too long. Where is the new talent? Who have you brought in recently? What value are you adding to the business?”

I stayed silent. I knew I hadn’t brought anyone in for a while, but I’d been busy working with the band, and I’d been listening to demo reels, but no one was good enough.

“I’ve been listening to demos, Dad. No one has jumped out at me.”

“No one out of thousands of demos you receive every week? I find that hard to believe.”

“I’m looking for someone special.”

“I’m sure there must be people who you’ve let slip by because you have such high standards. And what happens? They go to our competitors, and they sign them and make millions off of them. And where are we? Stuck with nothing. It’s not good enough, Jake.”

“I’m sorry, Dad. I’ll try harder.”

“No. It’s not good enough. I’m thinking about taking the VP position away from you, getting someone in to listen to the demos and see what’s been missed out on. If we’re lucky, they might not be signed yet.”

“No, Dad, you don’t need to do that.”

“Listen, Jake, if you don’t buck up and start producing results, you might find yourself disinherited entirely. I can’t have someone running the business who doesn’t know what they’re doing. I just can’t. I’ll find someone else who can run the business.”

I sat in silence as I felt my future drain away from me. Was he really serious, or was he trying to frighten me into doing something? I couldn’t be sure what he really meant, but I knew he would probably disinherit me if he could. We’d never gotten along. I’d never been good enough for him.

“You really don’t have to do that, Dad. I can do this, I promise. I’ll work harder. I’ll go back through the demos and see what I can find. You don’t need to get someone else in to do it. I know what I’m doing.”

“Do you really, though? I’m not sure. Between this and that ridiculous fiancée of yours, I don’t think I know you anymore.”

“She’s not ridiculous,” I said quietly.

“Silly thing with pink hair. I mean, who wanders around like that? The whole thing is just absolutely ridiculous.” He articulated the last word to drive home his point.

“Oh, for Christ’s sake, Dad. It’s pink hair. She can dye it back to its normal color and you wouldn’t have anything to say about her.
